In performing the self-assessment checklist for cultural competence, I scored high on the test. However, cultural competence is a characteristic that those in public health and public service must develop continually. Culture is constantly changing, so the need to keep an open mind and evaluate oneself frequently is a valuable skill to have.

I recognize that I am empathetic and tend to be accepting of others. Despite this character, there are times when I am less accepting of people and evaluate someone with a judging eye. Furthermore, I noted that I need to admit that my knowledge of some cultures is limited. This limited understanding must spark an intent in me to understand further any culture to which I have little awareness.

Most importantly, I observed in the self-assessment that I must avoid stereotypical thinking, even if done as a silly example or a joke of a particular person or group of people. Working in the stressful positions I have held, joking about situations and people is seen as a release. Most often, these jokes are to release tension. However, even if not believed, these views and thoughts can take root and cause problems and pain for those targeted. Even light-hearted comments about ones’ own culture can cause negative feelings and distrust in others.

Keeping a watchful eye on my feelings and words is key to maintaining a positive and respectful tone with others. Being open and honest with myself and having conversations with others about their feelings and beliefs can help me maintain a receptive character and help me continue my understanding of other cultures.http://rapworkers.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/c…

You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.

Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.

Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.

The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.
