Course details: This seminar course examines the violation of human rights through theoretical interpretations of the concept of violence, as well as modern forms of human enslavement as one particular form of violent control operating in the world today. The course relies on a critical interdisciplinary analysis to formulate understandings of the complexities of violence and modern forms of slavery. The course discusses the forms and theories of human violence and enslavement, while it tries to review the historical context of both phenomena. During the term backgrounds, social structures,
and shapes of violence and enslavement in Canada, North America and in the global context will be scrutinized. The course examines the interrelationship of critical human rights and social justice
within the framework of violence and human enslavement. Further, current expressions of human enslavement and violence are investigated in terms of social movements, corporate practices and
state complicities
