An example of mentoring I have experienced as a mentor

An example of my experience as a mentor is when I joined the AmeriCorps City Year nonprofit organization to tutor and mentor children from under-resource inner-city schools for 1 year (2018-2019) after I acquired my bachelor’s degree. These are children who were neglected by the system because of socioeconomic status. Moreover, because these students were neglected and the people and teachers around them have given up on them, these students have also given up on themselves. This action results in the students resorting to violence by lashing out socially and emotionally. Therefore, my role as a mentor was to help the students develop and improve their social and emotional skills.

The benefits of mentoring and coaching for the mentee and coaches

The benefits acquired from being a coach/mentor are developing communication, leadership, and personal skills. The satisfaction of giving back to the community, developing a deeper appreciation for life, and developing authentic relationships. However, the benefits acquired as a mentee is slightly different, which includes developing and gaining knowledge and skills from the experience of others. Increasing their behavior, social and academic skills, and confidence, and becoming more aware of personal and social growth.

Explanation of how personal mentoring and team mentoring can be related

Personal mentoring increasing trust, transparency, and the development of authentic relationships and collaborative partnerships. In comparison, team mentoring increases the individuals to become more team-oriented, increases shared knowledge and diversity and allows the individual to gain skills and knowledge from different points of view. However, both forms of mentoring are related in that it allows the mentee to gain knowledge and experience from others on how to navigate socially and emotionally, and improve trust-building in a relationship (Cronin, 2020).
