1. Explain how the Bible, the legal system, and pseudoscience was used to justify racism in the United States, especially as it relates to the slave trade. Be sure to quote specific scriptures, specific laws, and specific scientific inventions, and cite instances in which these ideas are refuted and/or confronted in at least three of the readings.
2. Explain the role that sexuality and sexual exploitation played in slavery, especially as it relates to “Narrative of a Slave Girl,” “Clotel,” “The Mulatto,” and “12 Years a Slave.”
3. Show how the slave owners in the real life slave narratives actually ended up losing their humanity in their effort to dehumanize black slaves. Be sure to cite specific examples from at least three of the readings.
