As we explored this week from Mary Gentile’s work in Giving Voice to Values, practicing actively speaking up on issues is important to building our ethical muscles. For this assignment, you are invited to complete steps 1 and 2.
STEP1: PRACTICE SPEAKING UP
- Choose a “practice site” at home or at work to speak up about an issue and/or situation that is challenging to try to resolve or improve your situation/issue.
- Consider the insights from our reading as you consider how you want to go about giving voice to your values in a new way.
STEP 2: WRITE UP YOUR REFLECTIONS
After you have completed your experiment in “speaking up” write a 3 -4 page double spaced reflective memo that captures your responses to the following questions:
- How did you decide on the situation/issue to address? Describe the situation/issue in your response.
- What happened? How do you feel about the experience?
- What would you do differently next time you need to speak up? How will that help in the future?
- What are your key lessons and/or validations gleaned from this experience?
