Assignment 4: Cortical Organization

1. Find and click on the following article in the PsycInfo database from the UMD library’s website. Once there you can find PsycInfo by looking at the alphabetical list or by subject (Psychology).

Ishai, A., Ungerleider, L. G., Martin, A., & Haxby, J. V. (2000). The representation of objects in the human occipital and temporal cortex. Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience12(Suppl2), 35-51. doi:10.1162/089892900564055

a. Click on “Number of Times Cited in this Database” at left.

b. Search for an article that (a) appears to be a primary sources journal article, (b) relates to the modularity of perceptual processing in the brain, (c) is fairly understandable, (d) one for which you can find the full text, and (e) is fairly recent (2015 or more recent).

c. Provide the reference in standard APA format, as I did above with the Ishai et al (2000) citation. You are allowed to copy and paste from PsycInfo—just make sure nothing was lost in the process. To do this, click on the article, the click on “Cite” to the right (you may have to scroll down) then scroll down until you see the APA citation.

d. Simply confirm that your article is 2015 or more recent

e. Is it a primary-source article (authors are talking about their own research)? Support your answer.

f. Summarize the article in your own (~300) words, explaining what it has to do with modularity of perceptual processing and the degree to which it supports the idea of modularity and/or distributed representation.

2. Find an article related to the separate dorsal and ventral streams by using a keyword search in either PsycInfo or Search Summon. Suggested terms are “ventral visual”, “dorsal visual”, “dorsal stream”, “ventral stream”, “dorsal pathway”, etc. You may wish to play with putting terms on different lines or using quotation marks to get more or fewer hits. As above, search for an article that (a) appears to be a primary sources journal article, (b) relates to the visual ventral vs. dorsal pathways in the brain, (c) is fairly understandable, (d) one for which you can find the full text and (e) is quite recent (2016 or more recent).

a. Indicate which search terms you used to find the article.

b. Provide the reference in standard APA format

c. Simply confirm that your article is 2015 or more recent

d. Is it a primary-source article (authors are talking about their own research)? Support your answer.

e. Summarize the article in your own (~300) words, explaining what it has to do with visual ventral vs. dorsal pathways and what it might add to what we have talked about in class and/or read in the text.
