Situational and Servant Leadership
Philosophy of Leadership Paper and Presentation

Purpose:

To engage graduate students in the important leadership practices of thoughtful self-reflection and critical thinking about leadership as they compose, and effectively communicate, their personal leadership philosophy. Their philosophy, and its precepts, should help guide their behavior (and that of followers) as future leaders and problem solvers. To do this successfully, students will reflect upon leadership approaches, concepts, case studies, and leader development exercises that we have discussed this semester. Students will be challenged to articulate what they believe about leadership and followership and why; describe a current leadership problem that is meaningful to them, and analyze their leadership skills and development with regard to how they can be a part of the solution.

Deliverables:

  1. Compose a 3-to-4-page (typed, double-spaced, size 12 font) paper that analyzes your philosophy of leadership in relationship to the following questions:

A. What leadership concepts are most important to you? Why? Reference at least 2 theories/models/approaches (use situational and servant leadership). You can also reflect on how the concepts that are meaningful to you have been illustrated in any of the case studies we examined in class.
B. How are you progressing in your leadership development to date? Summarize highlights from at least 3 leader development assessments. What are your leadership strengths? How have you demonstrated them? What are your challenge areas and how do you plan to grow in these areas?
C. Critically think about the leadership concepts and your leader development to date, and create an original conventional wisdom/takeaway about leadership. My original conventional wisdom/takeaway is the acronym P.A.R.I.T.Y. (Patience, Adaptability, Relationships, Integrate (as in integrate resources to help develop and solve business solutions), Technology (use technology to increase efficiency in the workplace), Y’all (as in YOU ALL, we are all in this together and we are stronger together). It should espouse the foundational leadership concepts you hold, and your demonstrated practice of leadership so far.
D. Briefly describe a contemporary problem in business or society that is meaningful to you. Why is it meaningful? How does your conventional wisdom apply to the problem? How are the leadership concepts that you named in part A, relevant in this case? How do you propose a leader solve this problem?

Below are 3 leadership assessment which I took, this should help you in part B of the assignment:

1) (See the conceptual leadership attached) here is the summary from that assessment: I learned, based on the questionnaire, that I view leaders as having high abilities, skills and relationships with people. I would agree with this assessment, although I thought that I would have have scored the highest regarding relationships. I scored a 20 on ability, 17 on skill, and relationship was 16. I would say that these scores were fairly balanced out with a mean of about 17.6 for my top three categories. The remaining categories had a mean of about 13.3. I scored a 14 for traits, behavior was 13, and 13 for the category process. The assessment reveal results that I anticipated. Often times I look at what a leader is doing rather than what they say. When they do not align I have trouble believing in what they are saying. Thus, why I do not value that particular quality of a leader. Traits are not high because they vary based on the situation. And the same is true with the process.

2) (see the leadership trait questionnaire attached) here is the summary from that assessment:
*In what areas did you rate yourself higher than your raters’ average? Why do you think that is so? Do you feel that these are areas that you can improve in? What can you do to ensure that others see the positive traits you believe you that you have?

As a leader, one ought to portray perceptive, persistent, and diligent traits. Having rated myself highly in these areas, I feel that as a leader, one plays a role meant to invoke followers. As a result, the component of leadership incorporates the unusual behavior of establishing the resilience to surpass limits, often preventing other individuals from achieving one’s full potential (Prochazka et al., 2018). Therefore, the capacity to portray perception and invoke other individuals’ thoughts to situations to foster proactivity illustrates one strength in motivating others to serve a common interest and goal. Further, determination and hard work portray a mindset for standing to one’s principles and objectives, which serves as an example to others.

Nonetheless, whereas I invoked a higher rating than the average rating in the mentioned areas, I feel that I could improve to the extent of being assertive and aggressive rather than often failing to set an example in fear of setbacks when confronted by myriad problems and complications (Prochazka et al., 2018). Therefore, I would seek to grow my confidence in the mentioned areas through honest communication, particularly to goals, objectives, and principles, while working towards them through enhancing interpersonal skills to manage motivation and positive interaction.

*In what areas did others rate you higher than you rated yourself? How can you grow in your confidence in these areas?

In the determination, outgoing, and conscientious areas, others rated me higher than I did. I feel that to grow in these areas, I ought to seek to indulge in goal setting while understanding my strengths and weaknesses to understand the areas to improve on. I would also look to resolve challenges by identifying the most recurring problems.

*What traits mean the most to you and why? How can you exhibit these areas more or grow in these areas?

From the traits, I feel that being articulate is a crucial trait for portraying one’s leadership skills. Markedly, an articulate individual tends to show skills for being persuasive through clear communication. To improve on these skills, one has to practice often to ensure that one perfects their oratory skills, including reflecting on one’s success and failure (Prochazka et al., 2018). Further, conscientiousness emerges as a vital skill in leadership as it often portrays diligence to the extent of setting an example as it offers one the capacity to invoke other followers’ impulses (Prochazka et al., 2018). Therefore, to improve one’s level of conscientiousness, one should seek to enhance their trait of agreeableness through interacting with and expressing care and thought.

*Finally, what do you think your overall raters’ assessments of you say about you as a follower? Do you think you are a good follower?

A leader has to portray traits as a follower. As a result, an individual with friendliness, empathy, and sensitivity often emerges as a good follower. Markedly, a leader has to portray a sense of duty to other individuals through diligence. In turn, this proves the capacity of one to serve others, which means being a follower to different individual’s needs and seeking to fulfill such, a move that portrays empathy, as one emerges as agreeable.
