As you watch the video of the talk and read the articles, starting with the longer one (Constructing the Dark Continent), it is possible to find yourself asking a number of questions and rethinking some of your received assumptions about Africa and its peoples. Tease out what you think are important points and lessons from these works and try to grapple with the following (and definitely many other) questions.
Can you list the images and stereotypes that come to your mind when you think of, hear and/or read about Africa?
How is Africa represented (in Western literary traditions, the media, academia) and why? Why is it easy to misrepresent Africa? How is that representation possible?
What are the implications of those representations?
How should we think and write about Africa?
