Question 4- Is sex “meant” for young people? What does society tell us versus what biology says?

When it comes to sex and who it is meant for there is no age limit or qualifications but there are some pros and cons to biology if young people choose to engage in sex. Sex at a young age can cause depression, pregnancy, sexually transmitted disease, substance abuse, and emotional problems. There are different issues depending on if you are male or female. Males can start to become more aggressive and are prone to antisocial behavior. These side effects can also come from sex later in life as well.

Society tells us that sex is for everyone, from feeling good, to making babies, to advertisement, to sex trafficking. Society tells us there is room for sex in our lives as soon as possible. Society tells us we have a high sexualized and permissive culture.

There are reasons that people give for being single, but do people consciously choose to be single? Why or why not?

This is a tough question but I would have to say yes, people do consciously choose to be single. “Several factors contribute to the increased proportion of singles. For one thing, more people are postponing marriage to pursue educational and career goals. Many young people are deciding to “live together” (cohabit), at least for a while, rather than get married. Also, as you can see in Figure 11.7, people are getting married later” (Fichner-Rathus, Nevid, Rathus, 2018, Pg.361). I think in our modern times, there are more and more people focusing on education and work and they simply don’t have the time to be in a relationship. This is not to say that subconsciously they don’t want someone to be with. I think as humans we all desire the need for connection to others. People are finding ways to connect and the single life can be enticing and exciting but there are pros and cons to being single. Our textbook speaks about the feeling of loneliness and inability to fulfill sexual desires.
