2) Individual Assignment (15% of total course marks)

Assume you decide to do a research with the title: “A new thought of hospitality/tourism/event industry: A consideration of COVID-19”. (Choose either hospitality or tourism or event industry in the title).

The assignment consists of FOUR main parts:

Part I: Introduction (max. 200 words)

• You need to introduce the background, the new thought, the importance of your new thought, the assignment structure, etc.
• Hints: If you cannot think of any new idea, you can search some pieces of recent news to better understand the future trends in the hospitality/tourism/event industry due to the outbreak of COVID-19. For example, hotel restaurants may highlight their takeaway and delivery services in the future. Based on this thought, you need to explain the relationship between this new thought and COVID-19 in details, and discuss why it is important to provide these new services etc.

Part II: Critique (max. 600 words)

• You need to select ONE relevant journal article to your use, and then give a brief summary and criticize it. When criticizing, you can discuss the research topic, research design, data collection/analysis, sampling method, etc.
• Hints: 1) “COVID-19” may not be the keyword for your literature/article search as it will limit the number of articles you can find. 2) When you select the journal article, please use the below table which includes criteria of selection. The article fulfilling all the criteria can be considered. You can seek consent of Dr. Ling Chan if you are unsure whether the article can be used even after checking the below table.
• Remarks: We strongly encourage critical and sensible evaluation of your selected article. If your criticisms are similar to the research limitation indicated in the mainbody of your selected article, then you may earn a low grade in this individual assignment.

Criterion

1. 1  The article is published in an academic journal.
2. 2  The article relates to your new thought.
3. 3  The article used primary data (collected from survey, or interviews, etc.)
4. 4  You could understand the article to a large extent.
5. 5  The article has a reasonable length (at least around 3,000 words in main body)

Part III: Self-reflective statements (max. 400 words)

• You need to make self-reflections by linking up to your new thought, the selected article (in Part II), and future career.
• Hints: After coming up with the new thought and reading your selected article, think about the following questions. How does it affect your further study? How to equip yourself to prepare for the future career?

Part IV: References and Appendix

• The reference list should be in APA format and include not only the selected article but also other references (e.g. news, journal articles, books, etc.) that you use to support your explanation in Part I to III.

In formatting your proposal, the following guidelines should be followed:

• The format for headings, tables and figures, references, and appendices should follow the APA Style.
• Use Times New Roman 12-point font, double spaced, 1-inch (2.5 cm) margin all around, and 8.5” × 11” page (A4 size) setting.
• Number all of the pages of your assignment and place page numbers in the upper-right corner.
• Before submission, check that the assignment prints correctly and the reference list is completed

* ALL individual assignments are due on 11:59pm, 25 Oct (Sun, Week 7). Each student should submit a SOFT copy of your work AND your selected article to Moodle. Late submission of the individual assignment will be subject to FAIL grade.
